Xiaomi 17T Review: No Gimmicks, Flagship-grade 5x Telephoto Camera

Xiaomi’s T Series has always been the lineup that sits between premium flagships and more affordable devices. It usually brings many of the features people want from high-end smartphones, but without the ultra-premium pricing attached to them. With the Xiaomi 17T, the brand seems to be focusing heavily on one thing this time around: telephoto photography. After spending time with the device, it’s clear Xiaomi wants this phone to stand out through everyday camera use rather than flashy gimmicks or over-the-top features.

Xiaomi 17T Review

Xiaomi calls the 17T “The Telephoto Master,” and surprisingly, the branding actually makes sense once you start using the phone. While many smartphones in this price range focus mainly on the primary camera and treat zoom as a secondary feature, the Xiaomi 17T feels like it was designed around its Leica-powered 5x telephoto lens. Whether shooting concerts, portraits, travel scenes, or random moments from a distance, the zoom camera ends up becoming something you’ll probably use more often than expected.

Of course, the Xiaomi 17T isn’t just about cameras. It also packs the MediaTek Dimensity 8500-Ultra chipset, a massive 6500mAh silicon-carbon battery, a sharp 1.5K POLED display, and several Xiaomi Hyper AI features that make daily use feel smoother and more polished. But at Php 33,999, the bigger question is simple: who exactly is this phone for, and does it actually feel worth the price?

Pros:

  • Excellent 5x telephoto camera performance
  • Flagship-level zoom quality
  • Long battery life
  • HyperOS 3 feels smoother and cleaner
  • Competitive pricing for the hardware

Cons:

  • No wireless charging
  • HyperOS still has some pre-installed apps
  • Ultra-wide camera is weaker than the main and telephoto cameras
  • No expandable storage

Design and Build Quality

The Xiaomi 17T feels premium the moment you pick it up, but what I appreciate here is that Xiaomi didn’t go overboard with the design. It doesn’t try too hard to look flashy or futuristic. Instead, it keeps things clean and straightforward, which honestly makes it look more expensive than it actually is. The flat frame gives it that modern flagship feel, while the matte finish at the back helps keep fingerprints less noticeable throughout the day.

Xiaomi 17T Review: Designa

For this review, we’re using the Violet colorway. Thankfully, it’s not the loud type of violet that instantly grabs attention. Xiaomi kept the shade more subdued and classy, so it still looks professional enough to bring anywhere. Depending on the lighting, the finish shifts a bit, which gives the phone some personality without looking too playful.

Despite packing a huge battery and a large camera module, the Xiaomi 17T still feels comfortable in hand. It’s slim enough at 8.17mm, and while the 200g weight is noticeable, it never felt too heavy during long hours of scrolling, gaming, or shooting photos. The camera bump is definitely there, but it doesn’t feel awkward or unbalanced.

The button and port placement are also pretty standard, which I personally prefer. The volume rocker and power button are positioned on the right side and are easy to reach even with one hand. At the bottom, you get the USB-C port, speaker grille, microphone, and SIM tray. The stereo speakers also sound surprisingly full for a smartphone, especially when watching videos or playing games without earphones.

Xiaomi also included IP68 dust and water resistance, which is always nice to have in a phone at this level. It’s one of those features you won’t always notice until you actually need it - especially during travel, outdoor shoots, or random rain while commuting.

The overall color selection also feels more mature this time around. Whether you go for Black, Blue, Violet, or Opal White, the finishes look more refined rather than trendy, and I think that matches the phone’s overall character pretty well.

Display Experience

The Xiaomi 17T uses a 6.59-inch POLED display with a 1.5K resolution and up to a 120Hz refresh rate. In daily use, the screen simply looks good.

Xiaomi 17T Review: Display

Scrolling feels smooth, text looks sharp, and videos have that punchy contrast people usually expect from OLED panels. I ended up using the phone a lot for Netflix and YouTube during downtime. The Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support definitely helped make movies and series look more enjoyable, especially in scenes with darker lighting or strong contrast.

Brightness is another thing I immediately noticed. The display can go up to 3500 nits peak brightness, and it actually helps a lot outdoors. I was able to frame shots, review photos, reply to messages, and even navigate maps under direct sunlight without struggling to see the screen. The smooth refresh rate also makes the camera preview feel more responsive when shooting moving subjects outside.

What I appreciated more, though, was how comfortable the display felt during long usage. Xiaomi included several TÜV Rheinland eye-care certifications, and while those usually sound like marketing terms, they do make a difference after hours of use. The display flexes its quality when I'm reading articles late at night, editing photos, endlessly scrolling through social media and binge-watching videos before sleeping.

Camera Performance: The Real Highlight

The Xiaomi 17T’s biggest strength is easily its camera system. In fact, I’d probably say this is one of the best camera experiences I’ve tried in this price segment so far. Xiaomi clearly focused heavily on imaging this time, and it shows the moment you start using the phone outside controlled demo scenarios. More importantly, the 5x telephoto camera doesn’t feel like a bonus feature added for marketing. It performs more like something you’d normally expect from a much more expensive flagship device.

Xiaomi 17T Review: Camera

The setup includes a 50MP Leica main camera, a 50MP Leica 5x telephoto camera, and a 12MP ultra-wide lens. On paper, the hardware already sounds impressive, but the actual experience matters more here. The 5x telephoto lens ended up being the camera I used most during the review period. I even had the chance to shoot the Blue Moon with its hybrid zoom or Supermoon feature. When shooting buildings, food parks from across the lake, or candid street shots, the zoom photos stayed sharp with surprisingly good detail. Unlike many phones that rely too much on digital sharpening, the Xiaomi 17T’s telephoto shots still keep texture and depth intact.

Portraits also look really good, especially outdoors. The 115mm equivalent focal length gives subjects a more natural-looking compression, while Leica’s tuning adds a slightly cinematic feel without making photos look overly edited. Skin tones stay believable, and background blur looks cleaner instead of aggressively artificial. I also liked using the Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant modes depending on the scene. Authentic gives photos a moodier and more natural look, while Vibrant works better for social media-ready shots.

Low-light performance was another pleasant surprise. The main camera captures enough detail at night without turning everything into an over-processed mess. Xiaomi still prefers slightly punchier contrast in some situations, but thankfully it avoids the over-sharpened look that many smartphones still struggle with. Even indoor restaurant shots and dimly lit streets looked usable straight out of the camera.

Another feature worth mentioning is Leica Live Moment. Instead of just capturing a single still image, it also preserves moments before and after pressing the shutter. It sounds simple, but it actually makes travel photos and street shots feel more alive and less staged.

For creators, the Xiaomi 17T also supports Log video recording up to 4K at 60fps. That’s a big deal for users who like color grading or want more flexibility when editing videos later on.

Performance and Gaming

Powering the Xiaomi 17T is the MediaTek Dimensity 8500-Ultra processor paired with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage. In day-to-day use, the phone feels quick almost all the time. Apps open fast, switching between multiple apps feels seamless, and even heavier workloads like editing photos or uploading videos in the background didn’t really slow the device down.

Xiaomi 17T Review

Gaming performance is also one of the stronger points of the Xiaomi 17T. Genshin Impact ran smoothly during my time with the phone, especially at higher graphics settings where the device was still able to maintain stable performance without sudden frame drops. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang also felt responsive, particularly during long ranked matches where touch response and consistent frame rates matter more. I also tried some shooting games like Delta Force, and the experience stayed smooth enough even during more chaotic matches with lots of action happening on screen.

What I liked more, though, was the thermal management. Even after extended gaming sessions, the phone never became uncomfortably hot to hold. It still gets warm, especially when gaming outdoors or while charging, but it remains manageable enough that performance doesn’t suddenly tank after a while. The phone also posts great results in benchmarks. In Antutu alone, it scored over two million (2,183,478).

The combination of the 120Hz display and the Dimensity 8500-Ultra also helps make the entire interface feel fluid. Xiaomi HyperOS feels cleaner and lighter now compared to older MIUI versions, and thankfully, the overall experience feels more polished this time around.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery life is another area where the Xiaomi 17T performs really well. With its 6500 mAh silicon-carbon battery, this is easily the kind of phone you can rely on for an entire day without constantly checking the battery percentage. Even on heavier days where I spent hours taking photos, gaming, watching videos, and scrolling through social media, the phone still had enough charge left before bedtime.

Xiaomi 17T Review: Battery

What impressed me more was how well it held up during lighter days. If your usage is more on the fair to moderate side, mostly messaging, browsing, streaming music, and occasional camera use, the Xiaomi 17T can actually stretch into a second day. There were times I unplugged it in the morning and didn’t feel the need to charge again until sometime the next day.

Charging also is not much of a problem here. Xiaomi’s 67W HyperCharge is fast enough that even short charging sessions already give a decent battery boost before heading out. The 22.5W wired reverse charging is also handy when you need to top up accessories or help charge another phone in a pinch.

Software

The Xiaomi 17T runs on HyperOS 3 based on Android 16, and overall, the experience feels cleaner and more polished compared to older Xiaomi software versions. Animations feel smoother, transitions are more refined, and the system itself feels lighter during everyday use. It still has plenty of customization options, but thankfully it no longer feels overly cluttered the way older MIUI releases sometimes did.

Xiaomi 17T Review: Software

Xiaomi also added several Hyper AI features including AI Writing, AI Interpreter, AI Speech Recognition, AI Search, and AI Creativity Assistant. Some of these still feel a bit situational depending on how you use your phone, but others are genuinely useful. AI transcription and translation worked well during meetings and interviews, while Circle to Search and Gemini integration made searching for things feel quicker and more seamless.

One thing I ended up appreciating more was Xiaomi’s Interconnectivity features. Transferring files between Xiaomi devices feels faster and more convenient now. It also allows me to transfer files to my iPhone and Macbook which I find very useful in my workflow.

The ecosystem integration is slowly becoming more useful if you already own other Xiaomi products like tablets, earbuds, or smart devices. Thankfully, Xiaomi also avoids making the AI experience feel too forced. Most of the features stay in the background until you actually need them, instead of constantly interrupting you with suggestions or pop-ups.

Verdict

The Xiaomi 17T focuses on the things people actually use every day. Its Leica-powered 5x telephoto camera is easily one of the best I’ve experienced in this price range, and it gives the phone a clear identity instead of just blending in with every other upper midrange device. What I personally like about it most is that Xiaomi didn’t rely on gimmicks here. There are no unnecessary flashy features trying to steal attention. It’s simply a phone with really good cameras backed by consistently strong performance.

Xiaomi 17T Review: Verdict

After spending time with the phone, I’d say the Xiaomi 17T works best for users who love taking photos, gaming, traveling, creating content, or simply want a dependable premium smartphone without paying flagship-level prices. It feels versatile enough for both casual users and more demanding users who expect more from their phone cameras.

At Php 33,999, the Xiaomi 17T is honestly one of the easiest phones to recommend right now in this category. The overall package just feels well-balanced, and the flagship-level telephoto experience alone already makes it different from many of its competitors. Considering how hardware costs continue to rise, especially for RAM, storage, displays, and camera components, I’d even say Xiaomi managed to keep the pricing surprisingly competitive for everything you’re getting here.
