The M5 chip provides a 10-core CPU and an up-to-10-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in each core. Apple states the new machine delivers up to four times faster performance for AI tasks than the M4 version. The processor includes faster unified memory with 153 gigabytes per second of bandwidth. This specification represents a 28 percent improvement over the previous M4 chip. The hardware upgrade enables smoother operation for multiple tasks and faster application launches.
Apple doubled the base storage to 512 gigabytes. Customers can configure the laptop with up to 4 terabytes of storage space. The new solid-state drive delivers twice the read and write performance of the previous generation. The laptop features a Liquid Retina display in 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch sizes. The screen supports 500 nits of brightness and one billion colors.
The fruit company retained the thin, fanless aluminum design. Apple offers both models in four colors: sky blue, midnight, starlight, and silver. The new N1 wireless chip adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support to the device. The machine includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports. These ports support up to two external displays. Users also get a dedicated MagSafe port to charge the battery.
Apple upgraded the webcam to a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera with Desk View support. The audio system features a three-microphone array and speakers with Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos support. Users get up to 18 hours of battery life from a single charge. The laptops also feature fast-charge capabilities.
The company plans to release the macOS Tahoe update alongside the new computers. This update brings Apple Intelligence tools like Live Translation in Messages and automatic categorizations in Reminders. Apple built the new laptops with 55 percent recycled content. The enclosure uses 100 percent recycled aluminum, and the battery uses 100 percent recycled cobalt.
