Sony has launched the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS, a 100-400mm super-telephoto zoom lens for 35mm full-frame Alpha E-mount cameras. The lens weighs approximately 654 grams and features optical image stabilization, fast autofocus and an optical design with two ED glass elements and two aspherical elements.
The FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS covers a 100-400mm focal range in a compact body. Sony says its weight and design help with handheld shooting and quick framing, while the focal range suits subjects such as birds, sports, trains and aircraft. An optional 2x teleconverter can extend the reach to 800mm on full-frame cameras and up to 1,200mm in APS-C mode.
At the heart of the lens is an optical design that uses two ED elements and two aspherical elements to reduce chromatic and other aberrations across the zoom range. It also uses a 9-blade circular aperture for softer bokeh. The lens can focus as close as 0.86 meters at the telephoto end and 1.13 meters at the wide end, with a maximum magnification of 0.41x.
Sony also equipped the lens with a linear motor drive for fast, precise and quiet autofocus. With the Alpha 9 III, the lens supports continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking at up to approximately 120 frames per second under Sony's test conditions.
The built-in optical image stabilization helps reduce camera shake during handheld shooting. The lens also supports Active Mode image stabilization and coordinated stabilization control on compatible camera bodies. For video, it supports compatible cameras with breathing compensation to correct changes in the angle of view during focus shifts.
For outdoor use, the lens includes a customizable focus hold button, focus mode and range switches, and a zoom lock switch. Sony also designed it with dust and moisture resistance in mind. The company notes that the lens does not provide complete sealing against dust or water droplets.
In the Philippines, the Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS is available for pre-order at Php 53,000. The promo runs from August 5 to September 4, 2026 and includes a free H&Y Ultimate HD Protection Filter 67mm worth Php 1,900. Customers can also get Php 6,000 off either the 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverter with every pre-order.
