The camera uses the Dual-Direction Quick-Release mount that we have seen in DJI Nano. This system allows faster mounting, easier repositioning, and more flexibility in terms of creative angles. I was suprised by how the OSMO Action 6 easily attaches to the Dual-Direction Quick-Release mount in real-world use. The magnetic lock and mechanical latch work together, so the camera snaps into place with a firm click and stays locked even during fast movement or rough handling. It avoids accidental removal, yet it still feels intuitive when repositioning or adjusting the angle.
Another major upgrade lies in the dual OLED touchscreens. DJI equipped the Action 6 with a 2.5-inch rear display with up to 1000 cd/m² peak brightness and a 1.46-inch front screen. Both panels support touch navigation and use tempered glass along with hydrophobic and anti-fingerprint coatings. I have no issue using both front and back screens in daylight. They remain visible in direct sunlight and also maintain their responsiveness even when the user handles the camera with damp fingers.
The Always-On Display feature is especially useful. The screen can show recording duration and status information during screen-off recording. I find this feature very useful since I don't have to approach the camera repeatedly to verify whether the footage is still rolling.
In terms of durability, the camera remains rugged and dependable. The Action 6 has IP68 waterproofing, this means that it can be used underwater up to 20 meters without a case. The Action 6 can detect water pressure, so it automatically stops recording when you come out of the water and starts recording again when you dive back in.
It also shows your diving time and depth in real time, and you can add a depth data dashboard later when editing your video. For land use, it can display your current altitude in real time, with the option to add an altitude dashboard in post-production as well.
Built-in storage is another practical upgrade. DJI included 64 GB of internal memory, with 50 GB available to the user. This removes the risk of missing critical moments due to a forgotten microSD card. The setting menu allows users to switch the default storage location anytime.
Imaging System and the New Variable Aperture
The most groundbreaking feature of the Osmo Action 6 is its optical system. It is the first action camera with a variable aperture, a capability absent in most compact cameras and unheard of among its competitors. The aperture can shift from f/2.0 to f/4.0 and offers four modes.
Aperture Modes offer several options depending on the scene. Auto Mode adjusts the aperture automatically and uses the maximum opening for low-light situations. Users can choose from five aperture ranges with f/2.0 to f/4.0 as the default. Auto is not available in SuperNight, Timelapse or when the Macro Lens is attached.
The Fixed f/2.8 delivers the classic action-camera look, with a minimum focus distance of 35 cm. The Starburst mode at f/4.0 shortens the minimum focus distance to 20 cm and creates six-point starburst effects for point light sources.

The Osmo Action 6 uses a new 1/1.1-inch square sensor with fused large 2.4 μm pixels. DJI states that this sensor reaches up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range and holds a 0.5-stop advantage in low-light performance over competing action cameras. The advantage appears clearly when shooting high-contrast scenes.
The square sensor becomes more useful with the new 4K Custom Mode. The camera records at 3840 × 3840, up to 60 fps. This square format grants maximum creative freedom during editing because users can crop into 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1 without losing significant detail. DJI’s intention is to give creators a single take that fits multiple platform requirements.
In terms of SloMo video, the camera also supports 4K 4:3 at up to 120 fps, which provides smooth footage with a wider vertical perspective. This suits mountain biking, skating or bouldering videos where vertical space in the frame enhances the sense of height and scale.
Video Quality and Stabilization
The Action 6 covers a wide range of recording options. Image quality stays sharp and detailed, and color accuracy remains consistent due to the integrated color temperature sensor. This sensor analyzes environmental lighting shifts and adjusts white balance intelligently. Underwater transitions appear natural, and the camera avoids heavy color casts. Flickering from artificial lights is minimized during night shots with stationary framing.
Stabilization Modes
DJI included multiple stabilization modes tailored to different shooting needs. RockSteady 3.0 suits sports and first-person action, keeping motion natural while reducing shake. RockSteady 3.0+ crops more of the frame but delivers stronger stability for rougher environments. HorizonBalancing keeps the horizontal orientation steady within a +/- 45° tilt range, while HorizonSteady fully locks the horizon across a full 360° rotation even at 4K/60fps.
Stabilization quality remains impressive across all modes. Even in situations with rapid vibration, the output avoids warping artifacts that sometimes appear in action camera stabilization.

Low-Light Performance and SuperNight Mode
Low-light capability sets the Osmo Action 6 apart. The larger sensor, variable aperture system, and AI noise reduction algorithm create cleaner nighttime footage without sacrificing resolution. SuperNight mode supports up to 4K/60fps in 16:9, 2.7K, and 1080p.
When SuperNight is active, users can choose from three aperture settings: Large Aperture f/2.0, Fixed f/2.8, and Starburst f/4.0. This provides flexibility to adapt to various night scenes, whether shooting street lights, indoor environments or low-light vlogs. Competitors with dedicated night modes often reduce resolution to lower image noise. DJI maintains resolution while controlling grain more efficiently. Photo Features and Burst Shooting
The Action 6 introduces 38 MP Burst Shooting and new 38 MP and 34 MP Smart High-Resolution Photo modes. These modes combine multiple frames to deliver images with higher dynamic range. Action shots benefit from fast burst performance, and the increased detail suits travel scenes, landscapes, and product photography during vlogs.
The Natural Wide FOV also reduces vertical distortion while providing an immersive sense of space. Landscapes, group shots, and wide city views appear more natural and avoid exaggerated curvature.
Portrait Mode enhances facial exposure transitions. Skin tones remain clean and natural. The camera avoids the green, yellow or overly pale cast that sometimes appear in action camera skin rendering. Even backlit or low-light portraits maintain reasonable detail and avoid heavy smoothing.
Macro Lens Compatibility and Creative Depth of Field
A major creative boost comes from Macro Lens mode. When the macro lens is attached, the camera activates Macro Lens mode automatically and sets the aperture to f/2.0. Users can manually adjust focus from 11 cm to 75 cm using the focus ring, and focus peaking is available in the Mimo app.
This opens a new class of close-up shots. The minimum focus distance now goes from 35 cm down to 11 cm. This helps users capture high-detail shots of textures, food, hands, mechanical parts, flowers, and pets at extremely close range.
The Action 6 also becomes the first action camera capable of capturing selfies with real background blur due to its combination of Macro Lens support and adjustable aperture. This breaks the fixed-focus limitation seen in most action cameras and gives vloggers a strong creative tool.
Colors, Creative Styles, and D-Log M
DJI enabled 10-bit color in both Standard and Log modes. The D-Log M profile preserves more highlight and shadow detail. This greatly improves flexibility for professional color grading. DJI claims up to 72 percent more color space than 8-bit video.
Real-time color preview allows creators to view approximate final colors while recording. Even without heavy grading, color reproduction appears consistent. The Osmo Action 6 also offers 32x Super Slow Motion by capturing 1080p at 240 fps and interpolating frames to achieve 960 fps equivalent output. The new 4 nm imaging chip analyzes each frame to generate smoother transitions. Fast sports movements such as jumps, flips, and drifts become easier to appreciate at ultra-slow speeds.
Moreover, a High Bitrate setting allows recording up to 120 Mbps depending on shooting mode and scene complexity. This improves image quality in fast-moving scenarios or complex textures like foliage and waves. DJI also introduced 2x Lossless Zoom Before Recording. Users can zoom without reducing 4K video clarity. This helps capture mid-range subjects that are too far for the default wide FOV.
Field of View Options
The 155° ultra-wide FOV remains one of the highlights of DJI’s action camera design. The maximum diagonal field of view delivers immersive scenes, while maintaining practical distortion control. Even with stabilization active, the frame retains an expansive look. During biking or first-person sports, the hands or handlebars remain visible at the edges, preserving the sense of immersion. Users who want minimal distortion can shift to Natural Wide for a more cinematic appearance.
Wireless Performance, Battery Life
Connectivity received strong upgrades. The Action 6 supports Wi-Fi 6.0 for wireless transfers up to 80 MB/s. Wired transfers using USB 3.1 reach speeds up to 300 MB/s. The camera can transfer files directly to mobile devices via USB-C to USB-C without additional apps.
For professional use, DP Transmission supports 1080p livestream monitoring or 4K livestreaming at 25 or 30 fps. Internal recording occurs simultaneously at 1080p 50 or 60 fps depending on mode. Multi-camera monitoring for live events, sports, and productions becomes easier due to this feature.
The GPS Bluetooth Remote Controller adds further convenience. Users may wake or sleep the camera remotely, control multiple cameras at once, and mark highlights during recording. The system also supports third-party Bluetooth remotes from Huawei and select Honda motorcycle controls.
