Review Summary:

Pros

  • Good-looking phone
  • Strong Performance
  • Capable main and selfie cameras
  • Upgradeable to Android 13
  • Speedy charging

Cons

  • No wireless charging
  • Secondary cameras disappoint

Design

Our review unit comes in an elegant Glazed Green colorway, but there is also a black variant available that may better suit your personal taste. The rear of the phone features a unibody design that offers a minimalist look. The Glazed Green material wraps the camera module and has chamfered edges that feels great on the hands.

Speaking of the camera module, it houses three sensors, with two of them having large camera enclosures for the main camera and ultrawide, while the smaller enclosure is for the macro sensor. Accompanying the cameras are the LED flash and the camera-centric branding that reads "Powered by MariSilicon." The MariSilicon is dubbed as "the most advanced imaging engine" in the market, which delivers better quality photos and videos especially in low-light conditions using artificial intelligence.

The phone's smooth glass backing looks exquisite. It may attract fingerprints but they are less obvious with the glazing material and the teal-like colorway. The sides are made of aluminum but could be slightly uncomfortable to hold knowing that the edges are on the angled side. The grip is also not that great, since the phone is a bit wider.

The phone's ports and buttons include the volume rocker on the left side and the power button on the right side. The top side features a secondary mic, visible antenna bands, and an IR blaster. Speaking of the antenna bands, they can be seen in all sides of the phone. The bottom houses the SIM tray, primary microphone, USB-C port, and speaker grille.

The front panel features tiny bezels and a hole-punch design that's protected by a tough Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The Reno8 Pro is 7.34-mm thick and weighs 183 grams, which is quite an ideal weight for me. It is also IP54-rated for some water protection.

Overall, the design of the OPPO Reno8 Pro is visually appealing and moderately comfortable to hold, but you need an extra care for it not to slip on your hands. The phone lacks expandable storage and headphone jack. Likewise, it does not support wireless charging which is a bit disappointing considering its price point.

Display

The OPPO Reno8 Pro boasts a generous 6.7-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution at 1080 x 2412 pixels and a pixel density of 394 ppi. This panel provides vibrant and life-like picture quality; the colors and contrast remain consistent, unaltered when viewed at different angles.

As a Pro version, the display performance is expected to be faster than the standard model, and the Reno8 Pro does not disappoint. Its capability to reach up to 120Hz refresh rate proves this point. Although there's no adaptive refresh rate, users can manually select either a 60Hz or 120Hz fixed refresh rate depending on their usage. The higher refresh rate is ideal for more demanding usage like gaming but it can also drain the battery quickly.

With its peak brightness of 950 nits, the display is very legible for outdoor use. Users can customize the screen color and temperature settings to their liking, with the option to switch between Vivid and Natural for color display, and adjust the temperature from cool to warm. Likewise, the software integration of Ultra Vision Engine enables users to apply image sharpener and video color boost, as well as activate bright HDR video mode.

Streaming movies and watching YouTube videos are quite enjoyable, thanks to the handset's large screen size, commendable colors accuracy, sharpness, and wider viewing angles. Additionally, the stereo speakers enhance the viewing experience with good sound quality that can get surprisingly loud, making it ideal for most listening situations. However, for the ultimate audio experience, users can always pair the device with high-quality Bluetooth earphones.

Overall, the OPPO Reno8 Pro's display is definitely one of its standout features, offering great picture quality, speedy display performance, and a range of customization options that cater to different user preferences.

Internals and Performance

The OPPO Reno8 Pro has earned its Pro moniker for good reasons. Compared to the standard OPPO Reno8 model in the series, the Pro is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max processor based on a 5nm architecture. This results in improved CPU and gaming performance, as well as better battery efficiency.

OPPO Reno8 Pro Long-Term Review: Performance

I have the 12GB RAM + 256GB ROM memory configuration for my unit. The generous amount of RAM facilitates smooth and easy multitasking, and it can also be further expanded with an additional virtual RAM of 12GB, a total of 24GB max. In my experience using the device, it was a snappy performer even with multiple apps running in the background. I was able to play popular titles such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Genshin Impact, and Asphalt 9 without any issues.

The OPPO Reno8 Pro supports 5G connectivity, allowing users to experience faster internet speeds and enhanced network capabilities. The device's biometric authentication methods are also quick and reliable. However, the optical fingerprint scanner is located way lower on the screen, requiring users to reach down further to access it.

Gaming Performance

The OPPO Reno8 Pro is a stand-out in its price point when it comes to gaming performance. As an enthusiastic gamer myself, I have had the opportunity to extensively test this phone and witness its gaming capabilities firsthand.

The device excels in offering users speedy performance, great graphics and an immersive gaming experience. When playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang on this smartphone, I was delighted to see how it could handle high graphics settings with ease. However, it is important to note that the "Ultra" graphics settings is not yet supported as of this writing for the OPPO Reno8 Pro.

One noteworthy feature that enhances the gaming experience is the Pro Game Mode. When activated, it automatically adjusts the screen refresh rate to High and touch response to Ultra, further improving the fluidity and responsiveness of the gameplay. Another aspect that impressed me was the phone's ability to manage heat efficiently during extended gaming sessions. The OPPO Reno8 Pro effectively dissipates heat, ensuring that it remains within tolerable limits, even during intense gaming sessions.

Likewise, the OPPO Reno8 Pro delivers an enjoyable gaming experience when playing Genshin Impact. Although the game defaults to Medium graphics settings, the performance remains smooth and lag-free. The visuals are vibrant and the gameplay is responsive.

The handset also effortlessly handles fast-paced racing game like the Asphalt 9. I had a great time playing this popular title in high settings without any noticeable lags or issues. The graphics were visually appealing, and the controls were highly responsive, allowing for precise maneuvers on the virtual racetrack.

The OPPO Reno8 Pro truly excels in offering users a pro-level gaming experience. There's also the software optimization aspect specifically for gaming purposes that I commend about the device. This optimization is very evident in my gameplay which ensures that the phone's resources are efficiently allocated to prioritize gaming performance while ensuring user's uninterrupted focus to the game, resulting in a seamless and immersive gameplay experience.

Camera

OPPO Reno 8 Pro's camera system is also very capable with its 50MP f/1.8 main sensor that's backed with 8MP f/2.2 ultrawide sensor and 2MP f/2.4 macro sensor. This flexible camera system captures detailed and vibrant photos especially in good lighting environment. Photos are sharp with excellent dynamic range and contrast.

OPPO Reno8 Pro Long-Term Review: Camera

The main camera also performs well in low-light conditions, even in nighttime. This is where the MariSilicon X chip does its magic as it recovers more light of the shadowy areas of the frame. The chip also takes some load off the Dimensity 8100, which is a good thing if you're doing other smartphone tasks alongside taking photos and videos.

The ultra wide sensor delivers passable quality photos, not as detailed as the main camera. This is also the same case with the 2MP macro. I feel like the phone needs more quality with these secondary sensors given that it's in the higher mid-tier segment.

Software, Battery

As of this writing, the OPPO Reno8 Pro boots with ColorOS 13 based on Android 13 (initially came out with ColorOS 12.1, Android 12). It's great to know that we could take advantage of this latest Android version for this handset. With that being said, the interface feels very smooth and fluid.

The squarish icons with rounded corners always look good in the eyes. With this version, you can turn apps into flexible windows and resize them to your liking, make use of the Smart Sidebar, and do Split Screen views. Of course, you can always toggle from Light to Dark mode, or even activate Bright HDR mode for videos.

This handset is equipped with a 4500 mAh battery that can last for extended periods. In fact, in our PCMark battery life test, the device delivered a total runtime of 13 hours and 54 minutes.

The handset's 80W wired fast charging feature also allows for speedy recharging times. OPPO claims that it takes just 31 minutes to fully charge the device in a socket. In our actual charging test, it yielded the following results:

  • 70% in just 23 minutes.
  • 100% in 38 minutes.

Furthermore, the device supports reverse wired charging, meaning users can charge other devices with it. As mentioned earlier, this phone doesn't support wireless charging.

OPPO Reno8 Pro Long-Term Review

Verdict: Should You Buy the OPPO Reno8 Pro?

The OPPO Reno8 Pro is a beautiful smartphone - it looks and feels premium as it draws nearer to the flagship segment. It also delivers in terms of performance with the use of Dimensity 8100 and a camera-centric MariSilcon chip. The main camera is also capable enough to compete with its contemporaries, however I think the addition of the ultrawide sensor and the macro sensor dilutes its effectiveness as a whole camera system.

The smartphone is suited for users who love a premium-designed smartphone with high-performance capability without crossing the flagship territory in terms of price. Overall, it is a great smartphone; it's something you can daily-drive if you rely heavily on a smartphone.
