In the Philippines, financial fraud and scams have become a growing concern, largely driven by the rise of sideloaded apps. These apps, often downloaded from unofficial sources rather than the Google Play Store, are typically disguised as harmless tools like quick loan apps or instant reward games. Unfortunately, many of these apps are designed to steal personal information or funds from users.

To tackle this issue, Google has launched Enhanced Google Play Protect, an advanced security system that provides real-time scanning to safeguard users against the dangers of sideloaded apps. The new feature detects apps using sophisticated methods, including AI-driven techniques designed to evade detection. Already, it has shown strong results in countries such as India, Thailand, Singapore, and Brazil—and now, it’s available in the Philippines.

As of February 10, Enhanced Google Play Protect has successfully blocked over 3.2 million high-risk app install attempts in the Philippines, preventing what could have been devastating financial losses. To put this into perspective, this is equivalent to protecting ₱3.2 million, assuming a loss of just one peso per blocked install.

“Online safety is crucial in today's fast-paced digital landscape. Google is reinforcing its commitment to user security with the launch of Enhanced Play Protect in the Philippines. This innovation automatically blocks the installation of potentially harmful apps from unofficial sources. We applaud Google's efforts to protect Filipinos online. By working together, we can build a stronger foundation for internet safety in the country,” said Emilio Benito Aquino, Chairperson and CEO of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Collaboration for a Safer Online Space

Alongside the introduction of Enhanced Play Protect, Google is also working with local content creators to promote online safety. In 2025, Google partnered with EduCreator Coach Lyqa to create a YouTube video addressing common cybersecurity myths. This initiative follows successful collaborations with artists like Ben&Ben, who helped spread the message of internet safety through music.

Additionally, Google is expanding its #YOUTHink media literacy campaign by releasing an Ilocano-language version of the publication. This effort, which already exists in Filipino, English, and Cebuano, is aimed at helping more Filipinos understand how to fight misinformation and protect themselves online.

Google is deeply committed to digital responsibility and internet safety, said Jackie Wang, Google Country Director for Thailand and the Philippines. This commitment drives us to develop innovative products like Enhanced Google Play Protect and collaborate closely with local NGOs, communities, and ecosystem partners. Together, we can build a safer and more secure online space for Filipinos.
