TECNO Phantom V Flip2 Review: A Step Into Foldables

After a month with the TECNO Phantom V Flip2, I have expanded my reach to foldable products, and with the advent of this device, it’s clear that foldable phones are becoming more accessible. Following the success of last year’s Phantom V Flip, which disrupted the market with its Php 30k price tag, TECNO has refined its approach with the Phantom V Flip2. With thoughtful upgrades and a focus on affordability, this mid-range foldable offers a compelling mix of performance and style.

TECNO Phantom V Flip2 Review: A Step Into Foldables

But who is this phone really for? Does it live up to its promise as an affordable foldable? And most importantly, is it worthy of its price? Let’s dive into the details in this review to find out.

Review Summary:

Pros

  • "Affoldable" - Affordable Foldable
  • Flexible cover display
  • Good camera performance

Cons

  • Choice of chipset could be better
  • Battery needs improvement

Design

The TECNO Phantom V Flip2 offers a refined design that feels both sleek and sturdy; it's quite a departure from the original Phantom V Flip. It features an aluminum frame, a steel hinge, and a smooth, textured plastic back panel. The top part which houses the cover display and cameras is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. This installment has better build than its predecessor which makes it a worthy upgrade in terms of design.

TECNO Phantom V Flip2 Interface

This foldable has two color options - the Moondust Grey and the Travertine Green; we have the latter which is highlighted by a minty green hue and gold accents. This combination is very appealing to the eyes. Looking into the phone's hinge, I could tell that opening and closing this phone is such a breeze; you can even make this clamshell open at any angle.

Furthermore, the display crease is present but it's subtle enough to make it look like it's not there when you used it more often. This shows how TECNO has improved a lot in its foldable arsenal. For security, the V Flip2 includes a side-mounted fingerprint reader that's embedded in the power button. The reader is quick, reliable, and always on.

The control layout is straightforward, with a well-placed power button and volume rocker, offering good tactile feedback. For audio, the device features a bottom-firing speaker and an amplified earpiece for stereo sound.

Display

The TECNO Phantom V Flip2 impresses with its dual-display setup and thoughtful display features. The external screen, a 3.64-inch AMOLED, offers a sharp 1056 x 1066p resolution (413 ppi) and solid brightness at 825 nits. While it’s capped at 60Hz, it’s great for quick interactions like checking notifications or glances on the go. I’m also impressed by its ability to run supported apps like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube directly on the screen. This means you don’t need to unfold it to browse these social media platforms.

TECNO Phantom V Flip2 Display Review

The internal 6.9-inch LTPO OLED display is the real highlight. With a 2640 x 1080p resolution and 426 ppi pixel density, it delivers crisp visuals and smooth transitions. Its dynamic refresh rate which ranges from 10Hz to 120Hz is also a welcome feature for my picky eyes. Actually, you can choose among four modes 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, and Auto-switch that intelligently adjusts refresh rate based on your current consumption.

Interestingly, the Auto Switch and 120Hz modes behave almost identically, reaching maximum refresh rates in web browsers, compatible games, and streaming services. For videos or apps incompatible with high refresh rates, the display, using the former mode, adapts to 60Hz or 30Hz, and it drops to 10Hz for static screens, making it efficient for power-saving.

TECNO Phantom V Flip2 Review: Video Streaming

Talking about its streaming capabilities, the Phantom Flip2 has Widevine L1 DRM certification, so apps like Netflix can stream in Full HD. While there’s no official HDR hardware support, it can decode HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG, ensuring decent video quality even without Dolby Vision. It’s a display package that balances functionality, performance, and adaptability.

Hardware and Performance

The Phantom V Flip2 is powered by the Dimensity 8020 processor, paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. This new processor is now efficient in handling thermal throttles compared to last year's Dimensity 8050. Popular titles like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang run smoothly with this handset. However, graphic-intensive games like Genshin Impact could be a challenge to the phone's cooling system.

The TECNO Phantom V Flip2 comes with a hybrid stereo speaker setup, where the earpiece doubles as a secondary speaker alongside the main driver at the bottom. While the earpiece isn’t as loud as the main speaker, the overall balance is decent thanks to their positioning. The sound quality holds up with clear vocals and rich mids. This makes up for a good listening experience overall. Categorically, the Phantom V Flip2 is a great companion for streaming content. However, I still prefer the audio quality of the original Phantom V Flip.

TECNO Phantom V Flip2 Geekbench 6 CPU and GPU Benchmarks

In our Geekbench 6.0 CPU Benchmark test, the Phantom V Flip2 scored 2489 MC and 759 SC. While, in our Geekbench 6.0 GPU benchmark, the phone tallied 4423 OpenCL and 4495 Vulkan scores.

Camera

The TECNO Phantom V Flip2 brings some noteworthy upgrades, especially in its camera department. While we have the familiar dual-rear camera system and high-res selfie camera, TECNO upped the ante in terms of camera specifications.

TECNO Phantom V Flip2 Camera Review

The Phantom V Flip2 steps up its game with a dual 50MP rear camera setup, featuring a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL GN5 main sensor with f/1.9 aperture, PDAF, and OIS. It is coupled by a 50MP Hynix HI5022 ultrawide lens that offers a 114° field of view and autofocus for versatile shooting options.

The main camera uses the well-reviewed GN5 sensor that is known for its decent performance. Photos look good with minimal noise and vibrant colors, but the dynamic range could be better. This can be seen with bright skies often lose detail. Interestingly, shooting in the full 50MP mode delivers sharper images and precise detail than the binned 12.5MP shots.

The ultrawide camera is a fun addition, especially since it supports autofocus. This sensor doubles as a macro camera. It captures decent detail, though I could see some softness in textures. Colors are vibrant in photos taken with landscape shots and creative close-ups.

Meanwhile, the front-facing 32MP Samsung ISOCELL GD2 sensor is carried over from its predecessor, and I’m glad it’s still here. The selfies are sharp and natural, with accurate skin tones and a lot of fine detail. Autofocus is also a big plus, which makes the phone versatile for group selfies or quick snaps. However, the dynamic range isn’t perfect, especially in bright lighting.

The camera app interface is pretty straightforward, with modes like Portrait, Super Night, Pro, and Sky Shop (to change the sky). The cover display can also act as a secondary viewfinder, which is handy for creative framing. The AI Cam (auto mode) does a decent job for point-and-shoot moments.

Low-light shots are serviceable. The automatic night mode handles HDR stacking well, but the dedicated Super Night mode can feel over-processed with aggressive sharpening. Still, the images are brighter and more detailed than expected for this price point.

Super Night Mode: 1x vs 2x Zoom

While there’s no dedicated telephoto lens, the 2x zoom using the main camera holds up well. Photos retain good detail and color accuracy. As for video, you get 4K at 30fps on the main and ultrawide cameras, which is impressive for a mid-range foldable.

The TECNO Phantom V Flip2’s cameras strike a good balance for casual photography. The upgraded 50MP sensors deliver solid results, and the selfie camera continues to shine. It’s not perfect—the dynamic range and some softness in textures could be improved. But for its price, this phone offers a versatile and fun photography experience.

Software

The Phantom V Flip2 stands out with its fresh Android 14 platform paired with a custom HiOS 14.5 skin. I'd assume the phone will receive at least two Android updates and three years of security patches, similar to other models in its lineup. One of my favorite features is the Always-On display, which not only shows a clock but also allows for custom QR codes, making it super easy to share business cards or Wi-Fi credentials. The lockscreen has convenient shortcuts for quick access to the camera and flashlight, and the Zero screen offers useful widgets for news, weather, and app usage.

Multitasking is also a breeze with split-screen and pop-up window modes, and I appreciate the MemFusion feature that boosts the 8GB of physical RAM to 16GB by adding virtual memory, ensuring smooth performance even with heavy apps. The Flex-Still Mode, for me, is a nice feature. This allows the display to "auto adapt" when it is flexed between 30° to 150°.

The Game Mode is another nice touch, with all the settings and stats I need for a more immersive gaming experience. The AI assistant "Ella" is impressively smart, offering voice commands and offline capabilities for quick tasks. I also mentioned about the larger and more functional cover display now supports full apps. It even allows selfies with the rear cameras, which I found really handy. Overall, the Phantom V Flip2 is packed with thoughtful features, making it a great contender in the foldable market.

Battery

The TECNO Phantom V Flip2 packs a noticeably larger 4,700mAh battery, a nice upgrade over the previous 4,000mAh capacity. Yes, the phone is a bit thicker and slightly heavier, but honestly, it’s a fair trade-off for the added battery life.

Battery performance is acceptable but could be better. Good thing there is a 70W fast charging support. This promises 50% in 15 minutes and a full charge in 45 minutes. In my actual testing, it charged to 50% in 19 minutes, which is close enough to the official claim. It’s fast, reliable, and ensures you’re not stuck waiting around to power up.

Verdict: Should You Buy the TECNO Phantom V Flip2?

Using the TECNO Phantom V Flip2 feels like having a companion that adapts to your needs. It’s tough enough for everyday use, versatile for capturing moments, and smart enough to handle whatever you throw at it.

TECNO Phantom V Flip2 Review: Best Affordable Foldable Smartphone 2025

With its thoughtful upgrades, sleek design, and sub Php 35K price point, it caters to users who want the innovation of a foldable phone without breaking the bank. While it may not rival premium flagship foldables in every aspect, it stands out as a compelling choice for those seeking a blend of functionality and aesthetics. If you’re looking for a foldable that works as hard as you do, this phone might just fit right into your lifestyle.
