HONOR 200 Review: Tough Smartphone to Beat Under Php 25K

Building on the success of the previous HONOR smartphones, the HONOR 200 catches the eye with its sleek design and strong features. This new model combines stylish looks with high-performance capabilities. It is pegged to offer a great user experience with its premium build and capable hardware.

HONOR 200 Review

Whether you're interested in its elegant appearance or its functional specifications, the HONOR 200 stands out as a great choice in today's crowded smartphone market. In this review, let’s take a deep dive into the phone’s capabilities and determine who it is best suited for.

Review Summary:

Pros

  • Premium build, shiny aesthetics
  • Very capable camera
  • Long battery life
  • Great value under Php 25K

Cons

  • No IP rating

Design

The HONOR 200 is a premium-looking device that’s worthy of your attention. We have the Black colorway; although it exudes a clean and straightforward vibe, that doesn't mean it can't also turn heads. The smartphone has a curved backing which makes it settle easy on the hands. The silky matte texture also adds a premium touch to the handset. I love using it without a case; however, I can’t trust myself not to drop it due to the slippery backing. Nevertheless, this is quite a beautiful handset.

HONOR 200 Review: Design

The high-quality plastic frame sticks out when you hold the device. It houses the essential ports and buttons. Speaking of, the right side has the power button and the volume rocker, while the top is a home to the secondary microphone, IR blaster, and a speaker grille. At the bottom, we have the SIM tray, primary microphone, USB-C port, and another speaker grille.

HONOR 200 Review: Ports and Buttons

We have a curved screen which makes swiping to the sides seamless. At the same time, the slim bezels make the screen as expansive as ever. There’s a center-punched hole on the middle-top provisioned for the front camera. Overall, the HONOR 200 is an improvement to last year’s HONOR 90 design - it’s slick and easily negates fingerprints. I hope HONOR treated the phone with IP rating to protect it from splash and dust.

Display

The HONOR 200 frames a 6.78-inch AMOLED “Quad-Curved” display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 4000-nit peak brightness. The panel has 2664 x 1200p resolution and 435 ppi pixel density. The screen also received a handful of features and certifications which include the 3840Hz PWM dimming (like the HONOR 90 5G), AI Circadian Night Display, Low Blue Light, and TUV Rheinland Flicker Free certification.

HONOR 200 Review: Display

The display quality is exceptional for the most part. It has good color reproduction, contrast, and dynamic range. With a 120Hz refresh rate, the screen offers a smoother experience when navigating through the UI and supported apps. The Dynamic Refresh Rate also conserves battery by reducing the screen refresh rate for certain apps, such as e-book readers or web browsers.

HONOR 200 Review: Multimedia Device

The display supports HDR10+, which provides a wider color gamut and higher dynamic range when using streaming apps like Netflix and Disney+.

The under-display fingerprint sensor is quite zippy in detecting fingerprints. This also explains why there is no fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button. Overall, the HONOR 200’s display is feature-packed, most of it you can actually use and very beneficial to your eye health.

Performance

Powering the HONOR 200 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. It’s an AI-focused chipset that’s developed under 4-nanometer process node technology. The HONOR 200 uses up to 2.63GHz of CPU clock speed with the high-performing Cortex-A715 core. This is coupled with three cores of Cortex-A715 with 2.4GHz speed and four cores of power efficient Cortex-A510 at 1.8GHz speed. We also have the Adreno 720 GPU and Qualcomm Hexagon NPU. There’s 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

HONOR 200 Review: Performance

This powerful set of hardware is evident in my daily use of the phone. I am treated with a snappy overall performance, especially in doing my daily routines and multitasking. Its gaming performance is equally exceptional.

HONOR 200 Review: Gaming Performance

I played countless sessions of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. The HONOR 200 supports the maximum graphics capabilities - Ultra settings for both Graphics and High Frame Rate. Running this MOBA game is a worthwhile experience due to the stunning visuals, true to life gameplay, and amazing details.

HONOR 200 Review: Gaming

Genshin Impact was another title I played on this smartphone. The gameplay offers great graphics without worrying about heating issues. Likewise, we tested games like Asphalt 9 and Call of Duty Mobile, and the collective experience is great.

In addition to HDR10, the HONOR 200 supports Widevine L1 DRM, making it an ideal device for content consumption. Likewise, I'm quite delighted to say that we now have stereo speakers in contrast to the model it’s replacing. The speakers are quite good with ample bass, highs and mids. It’s also loud enough to fill the entire room.

HONOR 200 Review: Geekbench 6 CPU and GPU Benchmarks

HONOR 200 Review: AnTuTu Benchmarks

In our Geekbench 6.0 benchmarks, the HONOR 200 scored 3339 Multi-Core and 1157 Single-Core. Likewise, in our graphics test, it tallied 4413 in Vulkan and 3601 in OpenCL. In our AnTuTu Benchmark, the smartphone achieved a high-performing 803109 score.

Camera

The HONOR 200 packs a triple rear camera setup that’s situated in an oval-shaped camera module. The main camera is a 50MP Sony IMX906 sensor with f/1.95 aperture and Optical Image Stabilization feature. It is coupled by another 50MP Sony IMX856 telephoto sensor with f/2.4 aperture - both have EIS and OIS capabilities. Lastly, there’s a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera which doubles as a macro camera.

HONOR 200 Review: Camera

On the front, the HONOR 200 has a 50MP portrait selfie camera. This camera setup inclined towards portrait photography with the addition of the 50MP telephoto sensor as HONOR collaborated with Studio Harcourt Paris.

The main camera consistently captures great photos in well-lit environments. Photos come with great detail and color saturation. The dynamic range is also very generous, as well as the color accuracy and color reproduction. There are 2x and 2.5x-zoom toggles in the camera app. Photos from both of these magnifications retain good amount of details while suppressing noise.

In low light, the main camera delivers. It is aggressive in pulling up shadows at the expense of blowing up the highlights. However, if you turn on the Night Mode this can be fixed instantly, leaving a photo with great details and controlled noise. Alternatively, you can toggle on the AI Photography in the app to automatically switch to Night Mode when needed.

The Portrait camera excels at taking self-portraits with Harcourt Studio filters. For the uninitiated, Studio Harcourt is a renowned French photography studio known for its distinctive style and iconic portraits. The hallmark of Studio Harcourt's style is its use of classical black-and-white photography with dramatic lighting techniques. They are known for creating high-contrast images that emphasize the subject's features and character.

Portraits: Hartcourt Studio Filters

Through this partnership, the HONOR 200 camera app has emulated three distinctive filters from the renowned studio: Harcourt Vibrant, Harcourt Colour, and Harcourt Classic.

The ultrawide camera delivers capable photos with good contrast and detail. Dynamic range is also okay but the photo lacks a bit of sharpness. In macro mode, the phone uses the ultrawide lens, providing decent close-up details of the subject. There are three magnifications available in this mode: 0.6x, 1x, and 2x. I’d say the 0.6x delivers the sharpest photo quality, while the other two being digital zoomed versions.

Macro Shots

The 50MP selfie camera supports 0.8x wide-angle shots. It supports most of the modes available on the rear camera; however, the Harcourt filters are not included. Selfies have plenty of details with natural skin tones. The portrait shots offer realistic bokeh effects and good subject detection.

HONOR 200 Review: Sample Selfies

The HONOR 200 can record up to 4K video at 30fps. Videos come with good detail, contrast, and color saturation. The clips look sharp and vibrant with great stabilization. If you’re a content creator, this phone could be a tool for your video production. The HONOR 200’s overall camera performance enters into flagship territory. Its portrait capability is also something to be lauded about, as well as the main camera.

Software and Battery

The HONOR 200 boots with MagicOS 8 that is based on Android 14. It is supported by Google Mobile Services and has security patches and updates every now and then.

We still have the same squarish design that we'd accustomed to with the previous versions of Magic OS. You'll have the option to choose between buttons and gesture navigation upon setting up. The control center and the notifications shade also exhibit simple designs. You can also share files between devices that support HONOR Share.

HONOR 200 Review

The HONOR 200 packs a 5200 mAh battery, which is larger than most of its competitors. In our PCMark Work 3.0 Battery Life test, the phone lasted 13 hours and 28 minutes.

HONOR 200 Review: Battery Life, Charging Tests

And where it's time to recharge the phone, the 100W fast charging support will get you juiced up in no time. This is an upgrade compared to 66W of the HONOR 90. In our actual battery recharging test, our HONOR 200 charged from 0% to 100% in just 45 minutes. Additionally, useful battery features such as Battery Saving Mode are included.

Should You Buy the HONOR 200?

Whether you're into gaming, photography, or just need a reliable phone for everyday use, this smartphone covers all the bases.
