vivo Y22s Unboxing, Initial Impressions

vivo Y22s is now official. This marks another Y series offering from the company in a "releasing spree" that has begun with the introduction of the vivo Y16 weeks ago. The new model touts the Snapdragon 680, 5000 mAh battery with fast charging, and more. I am quite curious on how this device will draw a line of distinction from its brethren. We'll save more of that in the review, but in the meantime, let's unbox the vivo Y22s.

vivo Y22s Unboxing

The vivo Y22s comes in a clean white box like what we had seen in previous Y series releases. You can find some important info and features about the handset on the back of the box. We have the 8/128GB memory configuration for our review unit, and it comes with the Summer Cyan colorway. Among the notable features highlighted in its packaging are as follows:

  • Snapdragon 680 Processor;
  • 5000 mAh battery w/ 18W fast charge; and
  • 50MP rear camera.

Opening the box, we are instantly greeted by the actual unit itself. The Summer Cyan gives a stylish and youthful appeal in a bright, lively greenish-blue hue. You can also opt for the other color option which is the Starlit Blue.

In our previous unboxing of the Y16, we noted that vivo has cut corners with the package - no case included, power adapter is only rated 10W despite the unit's support for up to 18W fast charging. In this new release, vivo now includes an 18W power adapter and a jelly case, together with the USB-C cable, SIM eject tool, and some documentation inserts.

Setting up the phone should be easy, and you can use your old device in setup to transfer files from your old phone to your new phone.

In the box Items:

  • Y22s unit
  • Documentation
  • USB-C Cable
  • USB Power Adapter
  • SIM Ejector
  • Phone Case
  • Protective Film

Initial Impressions

The Y22s frames a 6.55-inch 1612×720p HD+ display. It is an IPS panel; thus, it offers us quality display in any angles. The 90Hz refresh rate is something to be lauded about, especially if you're playing supported games. In addition, it comes with smart switch feature to auto select the most appropriate screen refresh rate, as the higher refresh rate consumes more power.

The display is defined by a 2.5D curved glass screen and a waterdrop notch which is an aging design that we had seen in all Y-series phones. We also have tolerable bezels on all sides and an 89.67% screen-to-body ratio. The phone is great for streaming movies with its large screen real estate, clear, wide, and immersive visuals. Aside from that, it also comes with eye protection to filter out harmful blue light, making the screen easy on the eyes.

Framing the device is a plastic light blue flat railing with rounded corners for a comfortable grip. The phone is comfortable enough for one-handed use.

On the flip side, we have a sturdy plastic material for the rear panel. The design exudes style and elegance which is attractive for its target demographics. It features strands of light waves pattern and the alluring tiny little crystals effect. When light reflects upon the panel, it gives off a combination of colors which offers an eye-candy treat visual.

Smudges are also not noticeable as they tend to blend in with the design; although this is not the same on the camera module which attracts fingerprints. The back pattern could also shift color tones when viewed on different angles; in my experience it turned into a blue-purple marble-like combination when seen in oblique angles.

For the camera module, we have a shiny glass-like black module that looks somewhat like a square. It features two equally-sized, protruded round sections with light blue frame that house the camera sensors, together with the dual LED flash, as well as a small inscription which says "AI CAM ASPHERICAL". Lastly, we have the vivo branding which complements the design on the lower left portion of the backing.

Under the hood, the vivo Y22s is powered by the Snapdragon 680 SoC that's fabricated using a 6nm process; this is also the same chipset that runs the whole show on the vivo Y35. By the way, if you want to learn more about the vivo Y35, you can check out our review.

The chipset operates an octa-core CPU with speeds clocked on 2.4 GHz; to be exact, we have 4 cores of Kryo 265 Gold clocked on 2.4 GHz and 4 cores of Kryo 265 Silver clocked on 1.9 GHz. It's supported by an ample 8GB of RAM, plus a RAM expansion with up to 8GB to harness more power when needed by the device. It also comes with 128GB capacity for your storage needs; and if this is not enough, you can add more space up to 1TB via microSD in a dedicated slot. We noted strong initial performance of the Y22s especially in handling multiple apps. Also, the handset's power-efficient SoC complements its large 5000mAh battery that lasts longer with AI power-saving technology.

According to vivo, the battery offers 21.5 hours of online HD movie streaming, 9.4 hours of graphic-intensive gaming, and up to 24.7 days of standby. As mentioned earlier, this is supported by 18W Fast Charge, where a 70-minute charge gets you 70% of power back. In addition, the Y22s comes with reverse charging feature should you need to charge another device that's running low on power.

Despite the phone's high capacity battery, it's not that heavy and weighs only 192 grams; complementing this for a comfortable hold is the phone's ergonomic body design that measures 164.30 × 76.10 × 8.38 mm in dimensions.

The ports and buttons are also in their no-nonsense placements:

  • right side: volume rocker, power button (this doubles as a fingerprint scanner);
  • top side: SIM tray; and
  • bottom side: 3.5mm jack, primary microphone, USB-C port, and speaker grille.

On the software side, the vivo Y22s boots with FunTouch 12 that is based on Android 12 mobile operating platform. I love the flat icons for the apps and simple toggles that's now integrated in the notification shade. However, there's still a number of bloatwares that come pre-installed.

vivo Y22s Initial Impressions: Software

For mobile gamers, you will be treated with features to enable you to enjoy gaming with the Y22s. There's the Ultra Game Mode to give you an enhanced, enjoyable experience with minimal to no distractions, on top of the Multi Turbo 5.5 to deliver a lag-free gaming performance.

In the camera department, the handset boasts a dual camera system topbilled by the 50MP, f/1.8 primary camera. This is coupled by a 2MP f/2.4 macro lens. We took a few sample shots with the main camera, and the photos are quite okay with ample details and contrast. The 16MP selfie camera also offers great selfies and beautification filters.

Conclusion

The vivo Y22s is a very promising handset. Though, I am hard-pressed where this device falls in the current Y series lineup, I'm pretty sure the device has its own charm to woo some buyers like the Snapdragon 680 chipset, 50MP main camera, high battery capacity with fast charging, and fantastic design. We'll discuss more of the details in our review.
