OPPO Reno7 5G Unboxing, First Impressions

The OPPO Reno7 5G continues the legacy of the popular smartphone line. Though there's a bump in naming convention, we still have the same Dimensity 900 chipset. It could be a tough decision to make from OPPO, but we're eager to know what more can we get out of this new model.

For starters, the OPPO Reno7 5G is redesigned with a sparkling new chassis and a bigger battery. It still packs the same set of cameras - well at least for the megapixel count. One major improvement is the newer version of ColorOS; it's now on version 12 but is still based on Android 11.

We're very lucky to have the first dibs on this handset. Join us as we unbox the OPPO Reno7 5G.

What's in the box?

The smartphone is packaged inside a turquoise color box with the imposing number 7 printed on the box's face. This basically means that this unit is part of the growing Reno series which is now on its 7th iteration. There's also a black bar at the bottom which extends to the back of the box - adding an exquisite look on the package.

On the flip side, you'll find some information about the handset; we got the Startrails Blue variant in 8GB and 256GB memory configuration.

Opening the box, there's a black packet which houses the documentations, silicone case, and SIM eject tool. Below it is the main unit enveloped in a usual transparent sheet which also shows a print of few of the handset's best features, like the Portrait Mode, Bokeh Flare Portrait Video, 65W SUPERVOOC Fast Charging, and TÜV SÜD 36-month A-level Fluency. The latter is a certification obtained by OPPO for the Reno7 5G; it's an evaluation of the phone's fluency performance in which the smartphone aced with the highest rating.

As mentioned we got the Startrails Blue colorway for our unit. It already comes with a pre-installed screen protector.

Finally, at the bottom of the box is the usual compartment for the charging cable and power supply unit. We have a 65W fast charger and a USB-C cable here.

Inside the Box Items:

  • OPPO Reno7 5G unit
  • 65W Power Supply Unit (SUPERVOOC)
  • USB-C Charging cable
  • Silicone case
  • Screen protector (mounted)
  • SIM eject tool
  • Quick and Safety Guides, Warranty

Design

The OPPO Reno7 5G is a good-looking smartphone. Our Startrails Blue model has a very exquisite back panel. The backing is done with OPPO's Laser Direct Imaging (LDI) which printed over a million of micro lines that look like shooting stars, thus the name Startrails Blue. The back is definitely made of high-grade plastic with a silky-matte finish.

The back panel's curvature that continues to the the sides of its frame is one of the things I love about the design. It facilitates good handling and ease of use. I love how the backing of the phone rests on the hand unlike the jarring edge of other phones in the Reno7 lineup.

Rounding up the ports and buttons placements, the volume rocker is located on the left side together with the SIM tray. The latter houses 3 slots: a dedicated slot for microSD card on top of the tray and 2 slots for Nano SIM cards on the flip side. On the right side of the device, we have a lone power button.

On top is a microphone situated near the right corner. Of course, we also have the earpiece centered in line with the top bezel, and the hole-punch camera on the top left side of the screen. Then at the bottom, we have the 3.5mm headphone jack, microphone, USB-C port, and speaker grilles.

  • Top: Microphone
  • Left: SIM tray (3 slots for 2 Nano SIM cards and microSD card), volume rocker
  • Right: Power button
  • Bottom: 3.5mm audio jack, primary microphone, USB-C charging port, and speaker

Considering the phone's footprint, all ports and buttons are accessible. It's also not a struggle to use it with one hand. The OPPO Reno7 5G is a well designed smartphone that you'd hardly put down whenever you start using it.

Display

The front panel frames a 6.43-inch FHD+ (1080 x 2400 pixels) display with 90Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ capability. It's also reinforced with Gorilla Glass 5 to negate tolerable outside forces.

The display is bright enough, in fact its peak brightness is 800 nits. I am quite amused with the quality of the display - colors are quite accurate with great saturation and contrast. The viewing angles are also very welcoming.

Camera

When it comes to the camera, the OPPO Reno7 5G packs a 64MP primary camera. It's accompanied by an 8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro sensors. On the front, the smartphone boasts a 32MP shooter. This set of cameras capture great photos in good lighting condition.

The Reno7 5G runs with ColorOS 12 based on Android 11. Things are pretty smooth when it comes to scrolling the user interface. There's a number of bloatwares present in this skin, but some of them can be uninstalled. Our overall initial experience with the software is buttery smooth, it gels with the Dimensity 900 processor.

The Wrap

The OPPO Reno7 5G is a very promising device. We liked its design, handling and ease of use; the display and camera are also points to look forward to. Our early impressions suggest that this is a very balanced smartphone with less compromise. We hoped it would come with a competitive price.

UPDATE: The Reno7 5G retails at PHP 26,999.
