PLDT partners with Roku, the worldwide leader in video streaming service. This is in line with the company's campaign of bringing the best digital content to Filipino households. So what exactly is Roku? What makes it popular?
What is Roku?
Roku is basically a streaming media player company which make hardware devices for home entertainment. The company is based in the United States where it enjoys a widespread popularity. In simple terms, Roku serves as platform for contents fetched from the Internet. It technically displays these titles to your TV set. What makes Roku popular is the slew of sought-after channels under its catalogs, we see them as apps.
As of this writing, Roku has more or less 7 streaming stick variants: Roku 1, Roku 2 (2014 and new Roku 2), Roku Streaming Stick, Roku 3 2014, Roku 3 with Voice Search and Roku 4.
One of the most popular titles is Netflix which technically offers a wide variety of original and exclusive shows. Other gems included in the platform are HBO Go, YouTube, Lifetime, etc. Currently, it holds 9 million users all over the world. So yes, Roku has its eye on Google Chromecast but the former has twice as many users than Google's streaming stick.
You can also play games with apps like Angry Bird, Jeopardy, etc. Other music streaming apps are also available in Roku.
Thus, PLDT is banking on the Roku to deliver its rich contents which is also reflected in the current iFlix and Fox Internaltional Channels. Having Roku on their porfolio of devices will definitely beef up PLDT's digital service. Of course, this will also take advantage of the company's fast Fibr and DSL backbone.
Roku PLDT Home Plans Availability
