The
Samsung J series has been performing well in the entry-level and midrange
market in the past couple of years. This year, the Korean giant refreshes its
smartphone line with newer versions of Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7. Both
smartphones offers capable feature sets for less cash. These include few upgrades from last year’s
handsets and appealing price standpoint. Check out what Samsung Galaxy J5
and Galaxy J7 have in store for us this year.
Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) and Galaxy J5 (2016): Tested and proven design
Samsung
sticks with its same no-nonsense design. Both handsets come with straightforward
looks. However, the Galaxy-maker added a diamond cut metallic frame which makes these smartphones standout in the wild. The back panel is entirely plastic with brushed metal finish
Most
elements are still on their proper places. The home button is still imposing at the bottom portion of the front panel. The off-the-screen menus accompany the
home button below; while the selfie camera, proximity sensors and LED flash are
situated on the top of the display.
Both
handsets come with round edges which make them easier to use. Overall, the
smartphones register an appealing ergonomic design.
Display
The
Super AMOLED tech of the Korean company is still the bread and butter of its
displays. Both the Galaxy J5 and the Galaxy J7 comes with HD panel which registers vibrant colours. The latter is the bigger puppy between the two with its 5.5-inch screen real estate while the
Samsung Galaxy J5 settles with a slightly smaller 5.2-inch display.
Internals
and Camera
When
it comes to the hardware, both handsets churn with powerful processors. This
year, Samsung manages to rev-up these handsets’ processors. The Samsung Galaxy
J5 ticks with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410. The package includes four cores of
Cortex-A53 with 1.2GHz speed and Adreno 306 GPU. There’s a 16GB on-board memory
which could be expanded up to 128GB via microSD slot.
The
Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 is even more powerful with an Exynos 7870 SoC. This is a Samsung’s proprietary chipset with 1.6GHz octa-core processor. In terms
of memory, the Galaxy J7 has a beefier 3GB RAM compared to the Galaxy J5’s 2GB RAM.
It also packs the same 16GB of native storage with up to 128GB expansion
option.
For
the purpose of comparison, previous year’s models only come with 8GB of
internal memory and 1.5GB RAM. On that note, multitasking and app launching are faster in the
current generation of Galaxy J handsets.
The
Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) and Galaxy J5 (2016) have identical cameras – 13MP
rear camera and 5MP selfie shooter. Both
front and back cameras have f/1.9 apertures which means that more light can
pass thru the lens and can perform better in lowlight environments.
Battery,
Software and Availability
What’s
more impressive is the fact that these handsets boot with Android 6.0
Marshmallow underneath the popular Samsung TouchWiz skin. The Galaxy J7 2016 is
powered by a 3300 mAh removable battery while Galaxy J5 has 3100 mAh Li-Ion battery.
Both
handsets are now available in the Philippines in White and Gold color options. The
Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 comes with an asking price of Php 14,990 while the
Samsung Galaxy J5 2016 has a cheaper Php 11,990 price tag.
