Sony introduces new handsets for Xperia NXT Series: Xperia P and Xperia U

Sony’s acquisition of Ericsson’s share in their mobile electronics venture seems to be paying off as it brings the true “Sony Experience” in their newest Xperia NXT Series. After unveiling the Xperia S earlier this year, Sony has just announced the handset’s little brothers in the form of Xperia P and Xperia U.

NXT Series is the “next generation” smartphones that manipulates a very minimalist design element with the highlight of a transparent horizontal strip near the handset’s base. It also resembles an Exclamation Mark on its sideview and possesses an industrial design that could distinguish it from other smartphones.

Sony Xperia P is a mid-range smartphone while Sony Xperia U is an entry-level android. The previous has a 4-inch screen display and a 1 GHz dual-core CPU. This phone will be the first receipient of the Sony’s WhiteMagic display (similar to NOVA Display of LG Optimus Black and Prada 3.0) which gives you the brightest viewing screen anywhere and anytime of the day.

The most amazing feature that Xperia P has to offer is the exclusive SmartDock that gives connectivity to multiple screens. This converts your Xperia P into an entertainment portal. In simple terms, when your phone has been connected with SmartDock, you can easily connect it to an HDMI to your TV. This, in turn, will transform your TV into a Smart TV where you can browse you favorite sites in the web and other stuff a Smart TV can do.

The hardware is available in a choice of silver, black and red, all with an aluminum-unibody. The handset is infused with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and the upgrade to Android platform 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) will roll out on the second quarter of this year.

Sony Xperia P Specifications

4” Reality Display with powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine
WhiteMagic™ display
1 GHz dual-core processor
16GB flash storage
8MP camera HD Recording, 3D Image Capture
Easy HDMI and DLNA connectivity
NFC (Near Field Communications) enabled
Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Sony Xperia U, on the otherhand, will have a 3.5-inch display and is more specifically inclined for audiophiles. The display will not feature the WhiteMagic but it’ll have its own distinction with xLoud and Sony 3D Surround Sound Technology in its music player. Expect to have loud and crisp audio in this handset. This device is very “emotional” because its illuminating transparent strip matches the color of the album art in your music’s “now playing” list. Xperia U also runs in 1 GHz dual-core processor, 5MP Camera and 512 MB RAM.

Xperia U Specifications

3.5″ Reality Display
Mobile BRAVIA Engine
1 GHz dual-core processor
5MP camera with HD recording and 3D image capture
xLoud and 3D surround sound audio technology
Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Sony Xperia P will be available in Q2 this year. Pricing is still in fuzz but we’re pretty sure that these puppies could be the next Android bestsellers. Check out the concept video for Xperia NXT Series below.
