Huawei MatePad T 10s Unboxing, First Impressions: More Tablet Power in an Affordable Price

Huawei MatePad T 10s is the newly released tablet from the Huawei MatePad T series. It came alongside its more affordable brother, the MatePad T 10. It's quite fitting that the company is on releasing spree due to the rise of Android tablet's popularity in this "new normal". We all know Huawei has been a major player in the tablet segment, and the MatePad T 10s shapes up to be a feature-packed offering, and even more affordable than the recently-released MatePad 10.4. Join us as we unbox this slate; we'll also give you our initial impressions and thoughts on how Huawei completes its tablet line-up. And who knows? This could be your next work-from-home or homeschooling device.

The Huawei MatePad T 10s Unboxing

The Huawei MatePad T 10s comes with a classic white box just like the previous MatePads before it. The main face of the box, we got the printed MatePad T 10s together with the Huawei and AppGallery brandings. On the side, there are some information about the tablet - 3GB of RAM, 64GB storage, and Deepsea Blue colorway.

Opening the lid reveals the Huawei MatePad T 10s, underneath there are two boxes for the USB-C cable, 10-watt power adapter, and SIM ejector tool. The inclusion of the latter means that this tablet supports cellular connectivity.

Design Impressions

The Huawei MatePad T 10s took some cues from the MatePad 10.4 design. The build is a polycarbonate plastic but it comes off with an aluminum-like finish. This makes the slate fairly resistant to smudges but you can still see subtle fingerprints building up on the chassis. The backing comes with a matte finish which makes it easier to use with both hands.

In landscape, the Huawei MatePad T 10s crams most of the ports and buttons on the top and the right side. The former is the home to the volume rocker and the power button. Meanwhile, the right side has the SIM tray, 3.5-mm audio jack, USB-C port, and a speaker. The other speaker is situated at the left side.

There's a protruding 5MP camera on the back, while the 2MP selfie camera is smacked at the middle of the top bezel. For a tablet, the bezels are quite acceptable. They also offer just the right thickness for ease of use and handling.

The Display, Hardware

The Huawei MatePad T 10s frames a 10.1-inch IPS LCD display with 1920 x 1200p resolution; this also gives us a 16:10 aspect ratio which is quite common for a tablet at this size. I also love the fact that the screen real estate is ideal for watching videos; in fact, you can use this tablet as a second display for your laptop.

Colors are quite accurate. Though I honestly think that the panel's brightness is not that punchy; though we might think it is because of the default wallpaper that's actually on the darker side. We'll have to dig in more to this on our review.

Under the hood, there's a Huawei Kirin 710A chipset which could be a dumb-down version of Kirin 710F. But we're open for the possibility of the former outperforming the latter. The chipset is coupled by 3GB of RAM for multitasking and loading apps.

Camera, Software, and Battery

You'll have the same set of cameras - 5MP rear and 2MP front - as the MatePad T 8. The main shooter comes with autofocus feature with f/2.2 aperture. Meanwhile, the selfie camera is a fixed-focus sensor with f/2.4 aperture.

The Huawei MatePad T 10s boots with EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10. We have the App Gallery and Petal Search for you to get the services and apps that you need sans the Google PlayStore.

Despite the fact that this is a 10.1-inch tablet, the battery may come short at 5100 mAh. You can tell that this one would drain faster compared to the MatePad T 8 which has the same battery rating. However, the Kirin 710A may have the right optimizations for that, and we're excited to find out.

The Wrap

The Huawei MatePad T 10s is the company's answer to the gaping price range of the mid-tier MatePad 10.4 and the MatePad T 8. The slate is priced at Php 12,990, and it's now on pre-order status until October 9. Huawei is also releasing the MatePad T 10 alongside this tablet at Php 6,990.
