Asus ROG GX800 Gaming Laptop First Impressions

Asus pulled the curtains off the highly-anticipated ROG GX800 gaming laptop in the Philippines. This beast is the successor of the ROG GX700 which contributed a major part in cementing the company’s place in the No. 1 slot of the computer gaming industry.

Asus ROG GX800 is the current flagship which has refined several key features of the GX700 like the liquid-cooled gaming dock. We got the chance to check this monster in flesh. Read along as we dish out our first impressions of the Asus ROG GX800.

The Asus ROG GX800 Gaming Laptop

Design

At first sight, the Asus ROG GX800 is a reminiscent of the previous models in terms of design. It preserves the ROG flare with its soft-touch plastic finish, metallic accents along a dark gray body and LED highlights.

This gaming machine is bulky but I’m not complaining, having a bigger footprint is never an issue for gamers like me. Like the GX700, the liquid-cooling dock is responsible in giving the GX800 it bulk. Speaking of the dock, to me, it’s basically the same dock we have seen with the GX700 but I do think that the connection module is more sturdy and secure.

Performance and Hardware

The Asus ROG GX800 is a one hell of a machine with it’s the Intel i7-7820HK. It’s a quad-core on-board processor which could tick up to 3.6GHz speed. I could skip my overclocking remedies with this specs sheet. But in case you’d go the overclocking path, you could achieve at least 4.4GHz.

Under the hood, there’s also a hefty 64GB of DDR4 RAM. The RAM complements both the i7 processor and two Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 graphics processor. The latter provides exceptional performance you can’t find in an ordinary laptop.

Display

The display is a whopping 18.4-inch IPS LCD panel with an eye-watering Ultra HD 3,840 x 2160 pixel resolution. This means that the graphics element is very solid since it’ll be running a 4K display.

Ports

The laptop alone weighs 5.7 Kg without the dock. In terms of port and connectivity, it’s a given fact that the GX800 will have the same desktop-grade ports around the device. For one, it has 3 USB 3.0 ports for easy file transfer. It also have a gen 2 USB 3.1 Type C which is compatible with Thunderbolt 3.0. Other ports include a Mini Display Port 1.4 jack, HDMI 2.0, two 3.5-millimeter audio jack (one for headphones and one for microphone) and a gigabit Ethernet port.

Keyboard

The keyboard keys are also pretty laid out. In GX700, there was nothing special about the keyboard since it’s also the same style I found in other Asus laptops. This time, Asus has taken notes and included a mechanical keyboard. Keys are soft with characters illuminated with backlight.

Plus, you could also customize backlight colors and configure them in static or blinking state. All of which depends on how you use the keyboard. There are dedicated ROG software keys on the top, volume keys and video capture key.

The Wrap

The Asus ROG GX800 got all the pipes to be the best in its category. I could say that it’s by far the fastest laptop I have tried – both in terms of graphics and processing speed. To make the story short, if you’re in the market for the best gaming laptop that could give you the most immersive gaming experience, the Asus ROG GX800 seem to be an impressive choice.
